A float sponsored by the Women's Trade Union League appeared in New York's Labor Day parade on September 7, 1908, the first Monday of that September, when unions marched through the city in large numbers. The League, founded in New York in 1903, brought middle-class women supporters together with wage-earning women to press for better pay, shorter hours, and safer conditions in trades where women worked in large numbers. The picture comes from George Grantham Bain's news service, and its title rests on the service's own caption notes, which the Library of Congress has not independently verified.
