Floats from the city's trade unions were a familiar sight in New York's Labor Day parades, and this glass negative shows one from the Dressmakers Union. The date on the record, 9/6/09, corresponds to September 6, 1909, which was Labor Day that year. Bain News Service, the photo agency whose work fills this collection, made many such pictures for the press, and the title comes from its own caption data, which has not been independently verified. Garment workers, many of them immigrant women, were central to the city's labor movement in these years, so the float is a window onto that organizing.
