Bakers march through a New York Labor Day parade hoisting a float built in the shape of a loaf of bread, a literal display of their trade. Labor Day had been celebrated in the city since the 1880s, when unions staged marches to press for shorter hours and fair wages, and trade groups often used floats to advertise skilled work. The George Grantham Bain News Service supplied newspapers with photographs like this one, and its glass negatives survive as a record of such processions. The recorded date and title come from unverified caption data, so the year deserves caution.
