Men carrying signs in a parade through New York set this glass negative apart from the many street scenes and portraits in the Bain collection. The record gives the date as May 31, 1909, which falls within the years after the Panic of 1907, when many urban workers lost jobs and unemployed people sometimes organized public demonstrations. George Grantham Bain's agency supplied photographs like this to newspapers, which is why the scene survives with its caption information. The title comes from data recorded by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and purpose of the march remain open questions.
