Marchers in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York, shot on a glass negative in 1909, show the city's annual march honoring Ireland's patron saint in full procession. The parade had long been a major event for the city's Irish immigrants and their descendants, and by the early twentieth century it drew large crowds along Fifth Avenue. George Grantham Bain's news service made many photographs of such public events, and this image records the ordinary street life and spectacle of the period. The title comes from the caption information Bain's staff attached to the negative, which has not been independently verified.
