The title places a senior naval officer, Admiral Coghlan, riding in an automobile within a parade for William Howard Taft, the Republican presidential candidate, in New York in 1908. Taft campaigned heavily that year and went on to win the November election, so the procession likely belonged to that busy period of public appearances. The photograph is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a press agency that supplied pictures of city life, politics and public events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The Bain caption cards are not always reliable, so the names and occasion are worth checking against other sources before you rely on them.
