Sailors in French navy uniforms march along a New York street in this glass negative, dated September 30, 1909. That date falls within the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, a months-long commemoration of Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage up the river and Robert Fulton's 1807 steamboat, which drew foreign warships and crews to the harbor. The title comes from data written by the Bain News Service, a wire-photo agency, and has not been independently verified. Bain's glass negatives capture the city's street life in the early twentieth century, when parades and visiting crews were common sights.
