Two people, identified in the record as M. Howlett and Mrs. Ralph Sanger, appear on a New York street in a picture dated 4/09, most likely April 1909. The names come from caption cards and negative notes made by the Bain News Service, so they have not been independently verified. Bain's agency supplied news and feature photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives record the everyday street life of the period. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium for press photographers of the time, which makes the image a useful glimpse of how New York's sidewalks looked before hand-held cameras became common.
