Children on tricycles ride along a city street in this glass negative, a common sight in crowded neighborhoods where pavement was often the only open space for play. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, supplied newspapers and magazines with thousands of images like this in the early twentieth century. The record dates the negative to April 2, 1909, but the title comes from caption information the agency wrote and has not been independently verified. Glass plates such as this one preserve the street life of that period, before the playground movement gave city children more organized places to play.
