A meeting of a playground association provides the setting for this scene, in which New York schoolchildren perform a German dance before an audience of adults. Demonstrations like this were common in the early twentieth-century playground movement, when reformers promoted supervised recreation and folk dancing as wholesome activity for city children, many of them from immigrant families. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, which photographed New York events and street life for newspapers. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain.
