Swings and a sandbox at Hamilton Fish Park, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, show a playground in a neighborhood where open space was scarce and most children lived in crowded tenement blocks. Playgrounds like this one grew out of the early twentieth-century push for supervised outdoor play, when reformers argued that city streets were no place for children to spend their free hours. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photography service that supplied images to newspapers during these decades. The record does not give a date, but the glass negative format and the style of the scene point to the early 1900s, a period when city parks were becoming a visible part of daily life.
