Union Square, the park where Broadway and Fourth Avenue meet, had long been a gathering place for working people and political speakers, and this glass negative shows one such assembly of men without work. The record gives the date as August 15, 1908, about a year after the Panic of 1907 cut deep into New York's businesses and left many workers unemployed. The Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, made the picture, so its subject reflects what editors then considered newsworthy. The title comes from the agency's own notes and has not been independently verified.
