Old Fort Crailo stood on Riverside Avenue, and its history reaches back to the Dutch era of the Hudson Valley, long before the city of New York took its present shape. The stone house was built by the Van Rensselaer family's relatives, the Van Crailo line, and it later served as a military post during the Revolutionary period, when local militia used such fortified farmhouses for defense. Its most famous association is with the nursery rhyme "Yankee Doodle," which is said to have been written here or in Albany, a claim that remains debated. Worth noticing in the picture is the sturdy masonry construction typical of colonial Dutch buildings in the region.
