Looking north from the roof of Pier 52 on the Hudson River waterfront, this view takes in the working shoreline of Manhattan's West Side, where piers of this kind handled much of the city's ocean freight and passenger traffic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Pier 52 sat at the foot of Gansevoort Street, one of the busiest stretches of the port, and rooftop vantage points like this one let photographers capture the long line of wharves, warehouses and ships stretching uptown. Such images are valuable today for showing how closely the city's commerce depended on its riverfront before container shipping moved operations to New Jersey and away from Manhattan's piers.
