The National Maritime Union, a union of merchant seamen, ran its headquarters in New York City, the country's busiest port during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Photographs of its hall from the 1950s typically show men gathered for shipping calls, dues business, and union meetings, the routine of a trade where a man's next job depended on who was at the hall that day. The NMU was founded in 1937 and grew into one of the largest maritime unions in the country, so the building served as a working center for thousands of sailors rather than a showpiece. The Library of Congress dates this print only to the 1950s, leaving the exact moment open.
