The Freedom Fund dinner held at the Hotel Roosevelt in Manhattan on November 22, 1957, was one of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's annual fundraising banquets, and this panoramic print captures the full width of the room. The NAACP used these dinners to raise money for its legal campaigns, and the 1957 event came only weeks after the Civil Rights Act passed Congress and as the Little Rock school crisis was drawing national attention. The photograph was made by Standard Flashlight Company, a New York commercial studio that often documented large events, so the wide format shows how many guests filled the banquet hall.
