Crowds fill the street in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue in this view, taken during consecration services, with religious processions moving through the throng. Designed by James Renwick Jr. in the Gothic Revival style and built of white marble, the cathedral was dedicated in 1879 and had become a landmark of midtown Manhattan by the 1910s. Photographers working in the city then often recorded gatherings like this one as its streets grew busier with traffic and pedestrians, and the picture shows a church's ceremonies spilling into public space. Its registration with the U.S. Copyright Office places it among the many prints from that decade held by the Library of Congress.
