Grover Whalen, the city's official greeter, rides in the open car beside Howard Hughes, who is waving to the crowd, and navigator Albert I. Lodwick. The parade honored Hughes's 1938 round-the-world flight, which he completed in under four days, one of the most publicized aviation feats of the decade. Ticker tape parades were the city's standard way to welcome heroes, and this one drew huge crowds along lower Broadway. The photograph was taken in 1938 and printed again in 1951, so the print records both the event and the later interest in it.
