Looking down on Broadway, this aerial view captures the ticker tape parade held on June 18, 1930, for Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Byrd had returned from his Antarctic expedition, and in 1929 he had made a pioneering flight over the South Pole. New York reserved its ticker tape parades for such heroes, and the shredded paper falling from office windows gives the canyon of downtown streets a snowy look. The photograph also shows how dense the crowds and tall buildings were along the parade route.
