Taken from the air around 1934, this view shows the harbor and waterfront of New York City from above, a vantage that was still striking to most viewers at the time. The photograph was made by Fairchild Aerial Surveys, a New York firm founded by Sherman Fairchild to produce aerial photography for mapping and survey work. By the mid-1930s, such images were prized for revealing the street grid, the piers reaching into the rivers, and the ships working the port, details that ground-level views rarely captured. The print was also registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, one reason many commercial aerial views from this period survive in collections today.
