Firemen pose together on the running board and brass-trimmed body of a horse-era or early motor fire engine, a reminder of how the city's fire companies looked before the trade became fully mechanized. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news photographs that Bain, a press photographer, sold to newspapers in New York between about 1900 and the 1910s. Such images were made to illustrate daily reporting, so the posed crews, polished equipment and gear offer a close look at everyday fire department life in the years before World War I.
