Few places in lower Manhattan were as tied to the water as the Fulton Fish Market, which operated on the East River near South Street and received much of its catch by boat. This print shows the market at some point between 1910 and 1940, when it was one of the busiest wholesale fish markets in the country. It was copyrighted by Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio better known for news and portrait photography, so it reflects a commercial photographer's view of a working waterfront. The market later moved to Hunts Point in the Bronx in 2005.
