Taken from the Manhattan Bridge, this view looks out over the Lower East Side around 1917, when the bridge was already a busy link between Manhattan and Brooklyn and the dense blocks below held some of the most crowded tenements in the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many photochrom and photographic views of American cities in the early twentieth century, made the print, and its record lists the skyscrapers rising beyond the streets as a key feature. Look closely at the tangle of rooftops and the grid of narrow lanes, which show how the neighborhood's immigrant population was packed into a small area while the commercial towers of downtown climbed behind it.
