Before "Brooklyn Bridge" became the usual name, this span over the East River was often called the East River Bridge, and this print uses that older title. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed under his son Washington Roebling, the suspension bridge opened in 1883 and gave Manhattan and Brooklyn a fixed crossing in place of the ferries. The record dates the print to about 1885 and credits a copyright to Herm. Briestler of New York City, though those details come from an old caption card and are unverified. The towers and cables dominate the view, a reminder of how new the structure looked then.
