This wood engraving shows the method of working the car-cable on the East River Bridge, the span now known as the Brooklyn Bridge, as the structure neared completion in 1883. It ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in late August of that year, a few months after the bridge opened to traffic in May. Engravings like this were the main way weekly papers showed readers large engineering works before photographs could be reproduced easily in print. The bridge's cables were spun and erected by hand over several years, and the image gives a sense of the specialized, physically demanding labor behind that construction.
