Rather than a scene of the river itself, this hand-colored lithograph presents the East River bridge as a project still taking shape, with its title stating the aim plainly: to tie Manhattan and Brooklyn together. In 1872 they were separate cities with their own governments, and the crossing was meant to join their growing populations. Work had begun in 1869 under John A. Roebling, who died that summer, and his son Washington Roebling carried the engineering forward. The bridge did not open until 1883, so the print captures an ambitious public work in its early years, when its scale was still more promise than reality.
