Catalogued under its early name, the East River Bridge, this view shows the span that later became the Brooklyn Bridge, which was still called the East River Bridge during construction. John A. Roebling designed the suspension bridge, and after his death in 1869 his son Washington Roebling carried the work forward, with Emily Roebling helping to manage the project. Opened in 1883, it linked Manhattan and Brooklyn and was then the longest suspension bridge in the world. The photographer, A. Loeffler of Tompkinsville on Staten Island, issued the image as a numbered photoprint, though the caption details have not been independently verified.
