Children on New York's East Side cool off in June 1943 by standing under an open fire hydrant, which serves as an improvised shower in the summer heat. City hydrants were a familiar summer sight, and the spray gave neighborhood kids a way to beat the heat at a time when few tenement families had air conditioning or private bathing space. The picture comes from the Office of War Information's photographic files, which documented home-front life during the Second World War. The surviving record is a safety-film negative, so the image exists as a copy rather than an original print.
