The picture shows children splashing at the free bath at the Battery, the park at the southern tip of Manhattan where the city ran public bathing for working-class families. In the early 1900s, New York's reformers pushed for municipal baths partly as a public health measure, since many tenement apartments had no private bathtubs. The summer crowds at such sites were a familiar sight in city newspapers. This print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographs document everyday life in New York during these years.
