Battery Park sits at the southern tip of Manhattan, where the island's land runs out to the harbor, and this 1935 view captures it at the edge of the Upper Bay. The park has roots going back to the 1700s, when the ground was a fort and then a waterfront promenade, and by the 1930s it had become a green stretch for workers, ferry commuters and tourists heading to the Statue of Liberty. The photograph was made by the Roege studio of New York, a commercial firm whose work was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why the print carries that record. Its clean composition makes it a useful picture of the park as it looked between the wars.
