Prospect Park, in Brooklyn, is the setting for this c1911 view, a scene of the park's green landscape rather than a building or monument. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed the park, which opened in the 1860s and was built around naturalistic meadows, lawns, and winding paths meant to offer city residents a restful break from crowded streets. The photograph carries a copyright credit to the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm best known for its commercial views of American scenery and cities in the early 20th century. Its prints were widely sold as souvenirs and travel images, so the picture also reflects how New Yorkers and visitors were encouraged to see their parks.
