Few natural sights were photographed as often as Niagara Falls, and this view takes in the Horseshoe Falls, the wide crescent that lies mostly across the river in Ontario, as seen from the New York shore. Visitors had been coming to the gorge since the 1800s, drawn by the roar of water dropping roughly 170 feet, and by the early twentieth century the American side had become a standard stop on sightseeing routes. Photographers of the period often used mist, rock, and railings to convey the falls' scale. The record gives only a date range, so the exact vantage point and maker are uncertain, but the picture belongs to the long tradition of tourist views that shaped how the falls were seen.
