This view pairs the American Falls with the Rock of Ages, a rocky outcrop near the brink that tourists of the period would have recognized. The print is credited to the Detroit Publishing Company, which built its reputation on color views made with the photochrom process, a Swiss method that transferred photographs to lithographic stones and printed them in several colors. The company issued scenic views of popular destinations like Niagara, and this one dates from roughly the turn of the twentieth century, when the falls drew steady crowds of visitors and postcard buyers.
