Rather than a view of the city, this engraving is a calendar for November 1878, issued as an advertisement for the American Bank Note Company of New York. Calendars like this were popular giveaways in the late 1800s, because a monthly grid kept a firm's name in front of customers for a full year. The American Bank Note Company was a leading engraver of banknotes, securities and postage stamps, so the fine line work here displays the skill the firm sold to its clients. The record is based on an unverified caption card, so some printing details remain uncertain.
