This long, narrow watercolor unrolls the American encampments along the Hudson River at West Point, New York, a site that the Continental Army fortified to command the river. The date of about 1778 is an estimate, since the title was devised by Library staff rather than taken from an inscription. In those years West Point was a key post, where a chain strung across the river was meant to block British naval traffic moving north. The panorama is worth studying for its record of camp placement and the river approaches that made the ground so strategically valuable.
