A long, narrow watercolor of about 143 by 28 centimeters, this panorama follows the Hudson River and shows American encampments set along its banks at West Point, New York. The library dates it to about 1778, when West Point was becoming the army's key stronghold on the river. Its position at a bend in the Hudson allowed American forces to block British ships from moving between New York City and Canada. The tents and huts spread across the hills and shoreline offer a view of how the Continental Army lived and organized itself in the field, making the drawing valuable both as a military record and as an early picture of the Hudson Highlands.
