This wood engraving records Abraham Lincoln's arrival at the Hudson River Railroad depot at Thirtieth Street in Manhattan on February 19, 1861, as the president-elect traveled by rail toward Washington for his inauguration. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper printed it on a sheet with two other scenes from the journey, the receptions at Cleveland and Buffalo, so it documents the trip as a series of public welcomes. Illustrated weeklies like Leslie's were the main way many Americans saw such events, since photographs of crowds in motion were still difficult to make. The image is worth a look for its depiction of the crowds and the depot itself.
