This photograph shows the steamer *Alexander Hamilton*, one of the passenger vessels of the Hudson River Day Line, which carried travelers up and down the river between New York City and Albany and offered excursions to the Catskills and the Palisades. The day boats were known for their large decks, ornate saloons, and leisurely schedules, and they were a popular way for city residents to escape the heat in summer. The record does not give a date, but the caption card identifies it as part of the Wittemann Collection at the Library of Congress, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of the river steamboat era.
