Stretching nearly 143 centimeters across and only about 28 centimeters high, this watercolor is a panoramic view of American encampments on the Hudson River at West Point, New York. The post guarded a sharp bend in the river, and the Continental Army used the position to block British naval traffic moving up the Hudson, with a heavy chain stretched across the water. The Library of Congress dates the drawing to about 1778, but its maker is not recorded, so it is best read as a record of how the army arranged its camps along the river.
