The lithograph shows the steamboat *Isaac Newton* making its way past the Palisades, the columnar basalt cliffs that rise along the west bank of the Hudson River north of New York City. Hudson River steamboats were a common subject for the Currier firm, which sold many such views to a public eager to see the river's scenery from the deck of a boat. The image was drawn by Charles Parsons and published by N. Currier around 1855. Its hand coloring and the boat's tall smokestack and paddle wheels show how the river traffic of the period was pictured for a popular audience.
