Stretching nearly 143 centimeters across the sheet, this watercolor lays out the American encampments along a wide bend of the Hudson River at West Point. The river here was the key water route between British-held New York City and the northern states, so the Continental Army fortified the high ground above it to block enemy ships. The sheet is dated about 1778, the period when engineers were building batteries at the post and a chain was stretched across the river to slow passing vessels. Its long, unfolding format lets the viewer follow the tents, the water, and the terrain in a single sweep.
