West Point sits on a high bend of the Hudson River about 50 miles north of Manhattan, and this view looks down the river from above the Washington Valley, letting the eye follow the water through the hills toward the south. The fort's strategic position made it one of the most important defensive points in the Revolutionary War, since whoever controlled the bend could block British traffic between New York City and Canada. Views like this one were popular in the 19th century, when travelers came up the Hudson by steamboat to admire its scenery and the historic sites along its banks. The United States Military Academy, founded at West Point in 1802, later grew up on the same ground.
