Looking north from the upper floors of the Western Union Telegraph Building, this view runs up Broadway toward Union Square and the city beyond it. The telegraph company's tower at the lower end of Broadway was among the tallest structures downtown when it went up in the 1870s, so the vantage point itself tells you something about how the skyline was changing. Street-level traffic, horse-drawn vehicles and the dense rows of commercial blocks give a sense of Broadway as the city's busiest commercial spine. Views like this were valued for showing the city's growth from above, a perspective still uncommon in the era.
