Elizabeth Street, photographed looking north from Hester Street, shows a crowded row of pushcarts lining the roadway in lower Manhattan. The pair of images on this stereograph card, made by the firm Underwood & Underwood around 1902, would have been viewed through a stereoscope to give a sense of depth. The neighborhood was then one of the densest immigrant districts in the city, and its street vendors sold everything from fruit and vegetables to dry goods. Look closely at the carts, the crowd, and the goods on display to see how busy the street trade was.
