The Western Union Telegraph Building at 195 Broadway, in Lower Manhattan, is the subject here, shown as it appeared around 1888. Western Union was the dominant telegraph company in the United States, and its headquarters was a visible sign of how quickly messages moved through the city's financial district, where brokers and merchants relied on wire service for news and prices. Built in the mid-1870s to designs by architect George B. Post, the building was among the larger commercial structures of its day. This is a photo-engraving, a printed reproduction made from a photograph, so its tones and fine detail reflect the printing process as well as the camera.
