Shortly after its 1913 opening near City Hall Park, the Woolworth Building was already the most talked-about tower in lower Manhattan. Architect Cass Gilbert gave the skyscraper a Gothic style with ornate terra-cotta detailing, and its 792-foot height made it the tallest building in the world at the time, earning it the nickname "Cathedral of Commerce." Frank W. Woolworth, founder of the five-and-dime store chain, financed the project and reportedly paid for it in cash, so the tower became a symbol of the city's commercial ambitions.
