The Woolworth Building's Gothic tower rises out of the dark, its pale facade lit by a Sperry searchlight, with the Brooklyn Bridge running along the edge of the frame. Cass Gilbert designed the building for the five-and-dime merchant Frank W. Woolworth, and it opened in 1913 as the tallest building in the world, a title it held until 1930. Made around 1919, this night view shows how electric light was helping to define the city's skyline as much as steel and stone did.
