Few views of lower Manhattan frame the Woolworth Building and the Transportation Building together as clearly as this one. Cass Gilbert designed the Woolworth Building, completed in 1913, and its Gothic detailing and height of roughly 790 feet made it the tallest building in the world until 1930, earning it the nickname "Cathedral of Commerce." The c1927 date places the picture in the years when downtown towers were crowding the skyline, and the print carries the copyright of Irving Underhill, a New York City photographer.
