Few buildings in New York carry as much early national history as Federal Hall, the structure this print revisits as it stood in 1797. It was on this site, at the head of Wall Street, that George Washington took the oath of office as the first president on April 30, 1789, and the building served as the seat of the new federal government until Congress moved to Philadelphia in 1790. George Holland drew the view, and H.R. Robinson's shop on Park Row produced it as a color lithograph around 1847, when a fifty-year-old scene was already a form of civic memory. The print is worth a close look for its adjacent streetscape, which shows the lower Manhattan of the early republic.
