City Hall and its park sit at the foot of Broadway in lower Manhattan, and few civic buildings in New York have been at the center of city life for as long. Completed in 1812 in a restrained Federal style, the building has housed the mayor's office and city government ever since, while the park around it became a gathering place for rallies, protests, and public ceremonies. This view was made by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1900 as a cyanotype, a blue-toned contact print from a large negative that preserves fine detail across the wide frame.
